WooMe’s Guide to Meeting New People - How to Weed Out the Unsavorables
Meeting new people online is no different, in some respects, to meeting people in the real world. Since we’ve been in the business of introducing people for a few years now, we thought we’d put together a list of things to keep in mind when you’re looking for a new friend or hot date on the web.
Pictures matter in Online Dating and Social Networking Sites

We’re not saying it’s all about beauty, but how someone presents themselves in a profile picture can tell you a lot. If they’re emo they probably take a lot of pictures themselves (i.e. the classic emo kid in the mirror shot). If they’re slutty they’re probably showing a little too much skin, and if they’re hiding being a fake profile picture they’re either extremely shy or extremely shady. Pay attention when you’re browsing photos online to find out what kind of people attract you.
How do they describe themselves in their online profile?
Are they witty, clever, dramatic? Do they use words like “pop the colla’ holla!” or are they more refined? Language tells you a lot about someone’s age and geographical location, as well as what subcultures they may be a part of. Descriptions can also tell you how modest or vain a person is. Descriptions like “smoking hot” may be true but at the expense of humility. Make sure you know what kind of person you’re looking for before browsing so you’ll be able to filter out the personalities that are not to your taste.
Do they have other social networking profiles?
Lots of people use the same username for multiple profiles and viewing their personality across multiple networks can be very enlightening. Try using WooMe’s people search to search for people by username or first and last name to find out if they have any videos posted to their profile.
What do they say in their first message/response to your message?
Keep in mind that the first thing they say might not always be true, but it can also be very telling of their personality. Did they crack a joke to make you laugh, or recite a sweet poem to catch your attention? If they’re trying to win you over in the beginning chances are they’ll continue to do so if you keep up correspondence. But maybe you like short, sweet and to the point? Trust your instinct when you read the first message. If you dig it, you’ll feel it in your gut and it’s safe to say that you should respond back for more information.
Are they just interested in Sex, or are they looking for Friendship, Dating or a Relationship?
People use online dating and social networking sites to connect with people for friendships, long term relationships and casual hookups. If the person you’re scoping out is only interested in encounters of the casual kind there is a very good chance that their profile will convey this. If you get the feeling that someone is just looking for sex and you’re looking for something long term, ask for clarification. Being straightforward and direct can be awkward in real life, however, online you can safely ask these kinds of questions from the safety and comfort of your own home.
